Avoid Bigotry When Looking For New Prospects
by Hal Neff
When you're recruiting prospects for your network marketing business, the one thing you should never do is discriminate. Hold off on your judgments regarding a prospect until you've had sufficient time to get to know them.
When it comes to network marketing, you are always going to see people who do things the right way and the wrong way. You can use what you learn from the experiences others have when recruiting new prospects to be a better recruiter. I have learned a lot about what happens if you make judgments about potential recruits before you actually get to know them.
Many times, a team member of mine thinks they have found someone who is the perfect new recruit for their business. This new recruit left their old company and promises to bring many more people with them. The team member believes this is going to bring great things but nothing really comes of it after all. The new recruit really does not do well and they don't bring the people with them that they promised they would. They are not the dream recruit that the team member thought they were and eventually they just go away and the team members if left feeling bad.
It is not uncommon for a recruit to look sketchy at first. They make lack everything you think you should be looking for. You may believe they have no aptitude, experience, or stamina for the grind of building a business network. The next thing you know they're complaining because you've been slow responding to them, as you've been prioritizing other aspects of the business. Soon such a person may end up being a top salesperson in the business, but on someone else's team.
Other team members have let go of a new recruit because the new recruit was not living up to their expectations. The recruit was not performing as well as they thought and just didn't seem to be a good fit. However, they did end up recruiting a few people and one of their recruits ended up selling more than any other member of the team. The team member who recruited them made a lot of money while the one who passed on them just had to sit there and watch what they missed out on.
When you're recruiting new people for your network marketing business, you need to remember that you aren't always right in your assumptions. The recruits you think aren't likely to achieve usually do, and the ones you assume will succeed usually don't. Now, what's hard is that you can't easily figure out which potential recruits are going to be successful and which ones are going to be duds. This is the reason you shouldn't make judgments on a person right away. It's better to look at any potential recruit as promising, whether that person is from your church, your kid's school, your neighbor, the cashier at the grocery, or anyone else you happen to come across every day.
You shouldn't outright assume that a person won't make a good member of your network marketing team based on what they do or how much income they're pulling in. You don't know a person's potential until you've taken the time to get to know them and their circumstance. In network marketing, you shouldn't discriminate. If you do, you're going to miss lots of opportunities to help others achieve their dreams.
When you're looking for new members to join your team, give every person who shows an interest a fair shot. A person's interest in the business alone should count. Be open to anyone who shows an interest in the business because you really won't be able to tell who the star performers are early on in the game.
